The lunar eclipse that is scheduled to happen after midnight on April 15th will reportedly be the first of four so-called blood moon eclipses that are expected to occur over the next two years.
When Earth aligns with the sun and casts a shadow on the moon, it creates the effect known as a lunar eclipse where the moon gets darker as the shadow passes.
As this happens, the color of the moon changes to a dark rusty red color, so it is sometimes referred to as a blood moon.
Groups of Christians believe that the series of blood moon eclipses could be a sign of the end times.
A book on the subject was published last year entitled ‘Four Blood Moons: Something is about to change,’ by John Hagee, which says that the eclipses might correspond with biblical prophecy.
But astronomers are more interested by what they call a lunar tetrad, which is when there are successive total lunar eclipses six months apart with no partial eclipses in between.
Experts have marked their calendars for the three other eclipses happening on October 8th of this year, and then April 8th and September 28th of 2015.
