Early risers may have an upper hand when it comes to weight management.

Early risers may have an upper hand when it comes to weight management.

Researchers recently connected getting a heavy dose of morning sunlight with having a lower body mass index.

In their weeklong examination of 54 people, doctors at Northwestern Medicine found that the ones who got 20 to 30 minutes of bright, morning sun were leaner than those who got late afternoon or early evening sunlight.

As they delved deeper into other factors including what the participants ate and drank the only variable that correlated to the BMI reading was the exposure’s timing and quantity.

One reason for this is believed to be how the color of light differs throughout the day.

Morning light is blue while afternoon and early evening rays have a more orange cast.

The blue variety is more powerful and thus better equipped to influence the body’s circadian rhythms, which impact the metabolism.

To work those findings into a real life strategy, it’s recommended that early light exposure be at an intensity of at least 500 lux, about the equivalent of a well-lit office.

There’s no need to worry if it’s overcast, as even grey skies allow for about a thousand lux. Full sun will get you 10 thousand units.
