Chile’s president has been surveying the damage after Tuesday’s massive earthquake which struck off the northern coast killing six people.

More than 2,600 homes were damaged and fishing boats along the coast near the port of Iquique were smashed up by the tsunami trigged by the 8.2 magnitude tremor.

As the ocean receded some of the 900,000 people who had been evacuated returned to their homes to find them in ruins.

President Michelle Bachelet promised the government would be there to support victims and she acknowledged the character of the people from Iquique whom she said showed the country great civic responsibility as well as those in Arica and Parinacota.

CCTV has been released showing the moment when the earthquake struck at around 6.45pm.

Twenty-four hours later and aftershocks have been felt, one measuring 7.8 and triggering a second coastal evacuation and a tsunami alert in Peru.
