The latest work of Abraham Poincheval, a French performance artist, involves him living inside of a bear carcass for 13 days.

There will be no moments of reprieve and for the duration he’ll be eating, sleeping, and relieving himself in the confines of the animal.

It’s not just any old carcass, though.

The bear has been sterilized and outfitted with a recliner of sorts and a pillow.

It’s also been rigged with cameras to document the artist’s experience.

Unpleasant and potentially harmful as it sounds, Poincheval is a bit of an expert at surviving in tight spaces.

In the name of art, he’s previously spent time in confined environments including a hole and a metal tube.

Also, This isn’t the first time he’s done the living-in-a-bear thing.

Last year he endured the feat at a contemporary arts center in Digne, France.

The artist said his inspiration came from the numerous carcasses he saw when doing a different piece in the French Alps. They got him thinking.

According to the press release, “Becoming a bear and the wearing of its skin is to bring about a liberating choice between human nature and animal nature.”
