A 33 hundred year-old tomb recently excavated in Egypt is believed to have once been covered by a pyramid.

Archaeologists say the now missing upper portion would have been about 23 feet high and the only part of the burial compound visible above the surface.

It most likely had both a chapel and a statue that listed who was laid to rest in the below ground chamber.

Had that information remained, there would likely be a lot less mystery surrounding the discovery.

Evidence and objects are scarce, and it’s believed the structure, including the lower area, had been ransacked a couple of times over the years.

What remained was an empty sarcophagus covered in hieroglyphics and several human bones in the tomb.

From those findings they were able to determine that the site housed a scribe who had ties to the military, given his elaborate final resting place.

The bones belonged to approximately 3 men, 10 women, and two children.

Their relationship to the scribe is unknown.

Evidence that another sarcophagus had been there at one time was also found. In a separate chamber there were multiple burial figurines mentioning another man’s name.
