US funded groups that pressed Morsi's ouster: New report

    by PressTV

A new report reveals that despite US government claims that Washington was not taking sides in Egypt’s crisis, it quietly funded Egyptian groups that pressed for the removal of former president Mohamed Morsi.

According to Aljazeera TV channel, a review of dozens of US federal government documents obtained by the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley shows that Washington channeled the funding through a State Department program which is part of a wider effort to try to stop the retreat of pro-Washington secularists. The move is in contradiction to the US government regulations that ban the use of taxpayers’ money to fund foreign politicians and activists that target democratically-elected governments. Egypt has been the scene of unrest after the ouster of Morsi by the military back in July.
