    Egypt's Sisi announces presidential bid

    by PressTV

Egypt's Defense Minister Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has announced his resignation in a bid to run for the country's presidency.

In a statement that was broadcast live on state TV on Wednesday, Sisi urged all Egyptians to work together to overcome the country's mounting problems.

"Today, I stand before you for the last time in a military uniform, after deciding to end my service as defense minister and commander of the armed forces," he said.

"With all modesty, I nominate myself for the presidency of Egypt," he said, adding, "I will continue to fight every day for an Egypt free of terrorism."

His resignation comes after a meeting with the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

No date has yet been set for the presidential election, but media reports say Sisi is expected to win the vote easily.

The latest developments come after the council of military leaders recently released a statement giving its blessing to Sisi's presidential bid, calling it an "obligation" based on popular demand.

The 59-year-old field marshal has also led a severe crackdown against the supporters of Morsi.
