In 1934, when the American comic book consisted of reprints from the newspaper funnies, Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson founded National Allied Publications and released New Fun #1, the first comic publication with all original content. He continued with New Comics, or what became Adventure Comics, introducing science fiction detective of the future, Jor-L.
Newsstands were hesitant to stock the new, unknown material. In debt, Malcolm partnered with printing-plant owner Harry Donenfeld in 1937 to publish his third comic book series, Detective Comics. A year later, Harry sent Malcolm on a cruise to Cuba to brainstorm new ideas, then sued him for nonpayment of printing fees while he was away. Malcolm was forced out and Detective Comics, Inc. bought National Allied at a bankruptcy auction just before Superman’s first appearance in Action Comics #1.
Superman panels had been thrown together to meet a tight publishing deadline, but became an accidental success with copies flying off the shelves. Therefore editors requested more larger than life superheroes. And thus the star of Detective Comics (Batman) was born, paving way for some of the most legendary heroes and villains of all time.
