Russia's upper house of parliament has approved a treaty that officially makes Crimea part of the Russian federation.
Russian senators ratified the treaty which has been already signed by President Vladimir Putin. The ratification came at the presence of Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov. The minister dismissed Western sanctions against Moscow over Crimea as irrational and unlawful. Lavrov said the sanctions imposed on Russian officials and businessmen would create barriers between Russia and the West. He also lashed out at his western counterparts for using the word "annexation" to describe the rejoining of Crimea to Russia. He said the word is an insult to Crimeans who voted in favor of joining Russia in a referendum on Sunday.
