Activist Lawyer Razan Zeitouneh and her husband, along with two other people, were abducted from their office in the rebel-controlled town of Douma northwest of Damascus on Tuesday morning (December 10).

Masked gunmen broke into the Violations Documentation Center headquarters and forced the group to leave by gunpoint, according to a statement issued by the activist network Local Coordination Committees.

No group has claimed responsibility so far, but it is suspected that one of the armed rebel groups that control the region is behind the kidnapping.

Razan Zeitouneh, 36, was trained as a lawyer and has been internationally recognised for her activist work. Zeitouneh founded the Violations Documentation Center, one of the most respected recorders of crimes of human rights in Syria, and she is one of the founding members of the Assad opposition network known as Local Coordination Committees.

Zeitouneh was forced to go into hiding in March 2011 when revolts broke out against President Assad in March 2011.

In the past few months, many activists have disappeared in areas held by al-Qaeda linked Islamic State of Iraq and Levant.
