At least one person was killed and five people were injured when a crane collapsed and fell onto a supermarket in Bad Homburg, near Frankfurt in Germany on Wednesday (December 11).

According to The Local, there were around 47 people in the supermarket at the time. An initial inspection of the site suggested that the crane had been turning before the 20-tonne concrete counterweight fixed on the machine fell onto the checkout area of the supermarket.

A 46-year-old woman was killed. Those injured included shoppers, supermarket employees and the crane operator who fell onto the roof, which partly collapsed.

The Frankfurter Rundschau reports that rescue workers were only able to enter the building via the remains of the crane. The building was seriously damaged and could easily collapse further. Authorities said there could be more fatalities.
