How did former NFL player Rae Carruth go from being a No. 1 draft pick in 1997 to spending 24 years in the slammer? To put it simply, he had second thoughts about getting a woman who wasn't his wife pregnant.
That woman was real-estate agent Cherica Adams, and she was eight months pregnant when she was boxed in by two vehicles and shot in a brazen public attack. Before Adams succumbed to her injuries, she was able to tell authorities that "Rae" had shot her. An emergency C-section saved her child, though a lack of oxygen to his brain left him severely disabled. Adams died a month later.
Once Carruth, who was out on bail, heard that she had died, he did what all wrongly accused athletes do -- he lammed it. Authorities found him hiding in the trunk of a car surrounded by bottles of his own urine outside a motel in western Tennessee.
He was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and is serving his 24-year sentence in North Carolina. The earliest he'll be eligible for parole is October 2018.
