War Machine isn't just a cool-sounding fighting nickname for the athlete formerly known as Jonathan Koppenhaver, it's his actual name. When TNA Wrestling objected to Koppenhaver's chosen moniker early in his career, he had it legally changed.
The aggressive term is also more of an ethos than simply a name. War Machine's been hampered his entire career by an inability to stop attacking people. This unfortunate trait may make him fearless in the octagon, but when he's moonlighting as an adult film actor and lashes out at porn stars like Christy Mack or Brooke Haven, the cops tend to get involved.
In fact, War Machine is so unpredictable and violent that it's probably cost him both of these high-ranking male fantasy careers. The UFC wants nothing to do with him after he kept insisting that fellow fighter Evan Tanner's death was a suicide. Machine was then signed and released by Bellator over horrific comments he made about Barack Obama (though the promoter has since re-signed him). His record is nothing to scoff at with 14 wins and 5 losses, however, the biggest obstacle to his MMA career is scheduling bouts around prison sentences.
In 2010, War Machine was sent away for a year due to a felony assault conviction. During that time he maintained his Twitter account with a series of bizarre tweets about the subjugation of men. He was released and then re-imprisoned less than a year later. His last release was on October 29, 2012.
