"Mr. Peabody & Sherman" took the top spot at the box office, bringing in $21.2 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales.

Outpacing last weekend's top box office movie "300: Rise of An Empire," which brought in $19.1 million this weekend.

Meanwhile, "Need for Speed" placed third in this weekend's box-office race with ticket sales of $17.8 million, according to studio estimates.

But it's been receiving rough reviews.

The New York Daily News wrote, ""Need for Speed" is like a great-looking roadster with a junky engine."

The stunt-filled movie starring Aaron Paul of the "Breaking Bad" series had hoped to capitalize on the video game franchise's appeal to young audiences.

It fell millions short of Hollywood's forecasted sales for opening weekend.
