A ridiculously cute baby gorilla is now calling the San Diego Zoo Safari Park home after a rare C-section birth. The first time mom, 18-year-old Imani went into labor and later started showing signs of distress.
Staffers at the zoo feared the baby wouldn’t survive, so a team of veterinarians along with human neonatal specialists from UC San Diego Medical Center decided to get the tiny gorilla out as quickly as possible.
The surgery proved to be a success. The female baby gorilla weighed 4.6 pounds at birth. She did suffer from complications after making it out into the world related to the stressful labor, but she’s expected to be just fine in the long run.
The baby is now receiving oxygen and fluids in the intensive care unit at the veterinary hospital. Nadine Lamberski, who works as the park’s Associate Director of Veterinary Services stated ‘In retrospect the c-section was the right decision. We think the health of the fetus would have been compromised if we delayed the surgery any longer.’
The new little girl has become the zoo’s 17th gorilla that was born there.
