Sometimes watching the bad guy get away is actually pretty satisfying.
The best example is 1995's The Usual Suspects. This was the film that put Kevin Spacey on the map and produced one of the most well-known twists in pop culture history. Watching Spacey's character Roger "Verbal" Kint spin his "tale" for nearly two hours was amazing and audiences were left in awe when they learned he made the whole thing up on the fly.
It was an awesome performance and one that broke the traditional mold of the cop film genre. Now, normally when audiences get played, they don't take it well -- but in this case, it was original, calculated and (most importantly) it worked! We've never been so thrilled to have been lied to!
