TURKEY: WEB USERS PAY TRIBUTE TO BERKIN ELVAN

These images, which have been circulating on social networks, bear witness to the scale of demonstrations in several Turkish cities, including Istanbul and Ankara on Tuesday and Wednesday – with tens of thousands of people taking to the streets following the death of 15 year old Berkin Elvan, nine months after being hit by a police tear gas canister during anti-government protests in June of last year. His family posted a message to Twitter on Tuesday morning, announcing his death to the general public.

His story has become a symbol of the heavy handed police tactics used to quell the protests. As some have been recalling on Twitter, Berkin Elvan had gone out to buy some bread, and was not even participating in the protests when he was hit on the head by a tear gas canister, indiscriminately fired by police: and this is why many, online and on the streets, have been holding a piece of bread as they pay tribute to him.
And social networkers have been paying their respects under the #BerkinElvanÖlümsüzdür hashtag which translates as Berkin Elvan will live forever; they have also been expressing their anger with the government. Some have shared a composite drawing of Berkin Elvan`s killer, portrayed as Recep Tayyip Erdogan, saying Turkey`s Prime Minister is responsible for the teenager`s death as he gave the police orders for the crackdown on the protests back in June.
