France threatens Russia with sanctions if Moscow refuses to accept the US proposals to solve the crisis in Ukraine.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius says sanctions against Russia could come as early as this week if Moscow does not respond to the initiative put forth by US Secretary of State John Kerry. On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rejected US proposals as unsuitable, saying that Moscow would soon send its own proposals to Washington. Fabius says the sanctions would involve freezing the personal assets of Russians or Ukrainians as well as visa and travel bans. He described the planned referendum in Ukraine’s Crimea region as illegal.
