Giant Earthworm Can Reach Almost 10 Feet in Length

On average, Giant Gippsland worms have a length of 3.3 feet. The creepy crawlers can live up to 5 years of age and if they make that far, the worms could reach nearly 10 feet long.

Generally speaking, earthworms are slightly eerie, given their slimy texture and unattractiveness, but their small size makes them seem relatively harmless.

Australia's Giant Gippsland earthworm, however, is one exception to the rule, as small isn't the best word to describe it. Those who aren’t fans of worms, specifically large ones, should stay far away from the Bass River Valley of South Gippsland in Victoria, as that’s where these creepy crawlers call home.

On average, Giant Gippsland worms have a length of 3.3 feet. They measure approximately three quarters of an inch in width and weigh almost half a pound. The worms can live up to 5 years of age.

If they make that far, the worms could reach nearly 10 feet long. With those hefty measurements, the worms bear a resemblance to snakes.

Giant Gippsland earthworms typically avoid humans at all costs. They thrive in the damp subsoils of river banks.

They burrow deep underground and stay there, even refusing to come to the surface to defecate. Vibrations from footsteps sends the earthworms deeper underground while producing ‘squelching’ noises that can be heard above.
