Do you think tossing a lit cigarette on the ground is harmless?

One recent and extremely bizarre incident unfolded in south London. A building recently caught on fire and the cause of the blaze is thought to be related to a bird carrying a lit cigarette.

Nine people fled from the building after it broke out in flames. Fortunately no one was injured. The aftermath of the blaze left approximately one fifth of the roof burnt.

London Fire Brigade investigators arrived at the structure to investigate how and where the fire originated. At first, they had no idea.

The crew thoroughly examined the roof but the ignition source could not be located. No one had been on the roof in quite some time and there was no electricity.

Said one of the investigators, Matt Cullen ‘Neighbors told us they often saw birds flying in and out of a hole in the roof. We believe that one of the birds picked up a cigarette butt that was still smoldering and dropped it into the nest, causing it to catch fire and set the roof alight.’

Cullen used the incident as an example to highlight the importance of putting out cigarette butts.
