The largest aircraft in the world, manufactured by the British company Hybrid Air Vehicles Ltd., has been unveiled to the public.

Known as the HAV 304 Airlander, the aircraft is reportedly a cross between a helicopter, an airship, a plane and a hovercraft that is the length of a football field.

Capable of landing on water, ice or on the ground, the Airlander can carry loads weighing up to 22 thousand pounds, while staying in the air for up to three weeks at a time.

Because it is a hybrid vehicle, the Airlander uses buoyant lift like a blimp filled with gas that is lighter than air, along with aerodynamic lift from the shape of the exterior, and thrust provided by the engines.

It was originally contracted for use by the United States Army, but they canceled the project last year because of budget cuts.

Hybrid Air Vehicles Ltd. bought the aircraft back from the US military for only 301 thousand dollars, which is less than one percent of the 300 million that the military spent on the development of the Airlander.
