It has not yet been officially determined why Betti was in the freight train’s path, but authorities suspect she dropped her cellphone and walked on the tracks to retrieve it.

According to a BNSF Railway spokeswoman, crew members on the train spotted Betti on the tracks along with another person, who is thought to be her boyfriend. They both stepped off the tracks but Betti unexpectedly walked back on them.

She misjudged the distance and speed of the train and sadly, she was fatally struck shortly thereafter. In a Facebook post, Betti's mother noted that she got sucked under the train by its vacuum-like suction.

Police have opened up an investigation into the case. The community, on the other hand, is trying to come to terms with what happened. Grief counselors are stationed at the junior high school for Betti’s classmates and teachers.

Jonathan Egan, the junior high school principal commented “She was always laughing if you would see her at the lunch table with her friends. In class, she was a good student…She was the life of party in positive way.”
