The ancient Egyptians swore by the life-extending benefits of mushrooms, and many modern scientists are beginning to feel the same way.

The ancient Egyptians swore by the life-extending benefits of mushrooms, and many modern scientists are beginning to feel the same way.

Recently, several studies have shown that the fungus has great potential in the arena of fighting cancer.

Among those that have been specifically studied are white button, maitaki, reishi, and shiitake.

Their benefits vary from inhibiting cell growth to actually shrinking the size of tumors.

Both the white button and maitaki varieties show promise in treating breast cancer.

Researchers working for City of Hope discovered that the common white button mushroom is capable of blocking a protein associated with breast tumors, resulting in a slowed growth rate.

Scientists at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center found that maitakis also showed evidence of combating the cancer cells by stimulating the body’s immune system.

Reishi mushrooms, on the other hand, are said to attack the antigens associated with tumors, resulting in the actual death of the malignant cells.

Impressive results have also come from the studies of the shiitake.

Experts at China’s Harbin University of Science and Technology say they’ve isolated a compound in the mushroom that is capable of increasing survival rates and reducing the likelihood of the cancer returning.
