The British company called what3words has developed a new way of telling people precise locations around the world without having to use a street address or GPS location coordinates. Their system split up the world map into 57 trillion three square meter areas using a cross section of three words, which when combined, become an exact location.

The British company called what3words has developed a new way of telling people precise locations around the world without having to use a street address or GPS location coordinates.

Their alternative mapping system splits the world map into 57 trillion three square meter areas and by randomly assigning each a three word identifier, points to the exact location. In the words of one of the founders, “Let's get the accuracy of GPS coordinates, but let's get a human-friendly way to get people to use them."

They want to change the address of the White House and other US government buildings to be just three words based on their system.

According to what3words, the White House is located at hours.alert.photo and the Capitol Building can be identified with the words judges.tunnel.bump.

What3words, or w3w, launched their mapping project in July of last year, and recently announced the release of an app for people to start using the three word system.

There is also the option of buying a one word identification that can be registered with the company for an even easier way to pinpoint a location.

Prices vary depending on how long you want to register the one word location, ranging from a dollar and fifty cents for one year to eleven dollars and forty cents for 10 years.
