US President Barack Obama has warned Russia about the consequences of any military intervention in Ukraine.
Obama also said any violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity would be deeply destabilizing. His comments come after acting Ukrainian president Oleksandr Turchynov called on Russia to stop what he called provocations in Ukraine’s autonomous Crimea region. Turchynov accused Russia of open aggression against the country and said Moscow is working on a scenario similar to the one before it went to war with Georgia in 2008. Moscow, however, says the movements of its armed forces in Crimea are in full compliance with Russia-Ukraine agreements. The Russian Foreign Ministry says the mission is necessary to provide security for the Black Sea fleet’s naval deployment areas on Ukrainian territory. It added that the Ukrainian government has been informed about the movements.
