A new weather satellite was launched on Thursday (February 27) from Japan aimed at providing high-tech, three dimensional views of hurricanes, rainstorms and snowfall around the earth.
The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) will provide worldwide weather updates every three hours. NASA and the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched the GPM Core Observatory satellite carrying advanced instruments that will set a new standard for precipitation measurements from space.
The GPM mission will help advance our understanding of Earth's water and energy cycles, improve the forecasting of extreme events that cause natural disasters.
The satellite was launched from Tanegashima Island, off the southern coast of Kyushu.
