France has again claimed the title of world’s top tourist destination, welcoming around 83 million international guests in 2013.

Even though the US is 15 times France’s size, around 15 million fewer world travelers showed up to enjoy the extra elbow room.

Nonetheless, enough people did come to make the United States the 2nd most popular travel destination with approximately 67 million visitors.

Spain and China continued to duke it out for 3rd place, but this time around Spain edged ahead by increasing their tourism by just over 5 and a half percent.

China slipped only slightly in the rankings, ending up in 4th place.

Other global hot spots include Italy, Germany, and the UK.

Apart from the US and China, several non-European destinations are perennial favorites, including Turkey, Malaysia, and Mexico.

Thailand and Saudi Arabia also do quite well for themselves.

Those rankings, however, don’t tell the whole story and a roundup of tourism dollars tells a slightly different version of the global travel story.

When it comes to tourism income however, a 2011 report put the US in the top spot followed by Spain and then France. China then still came in at 4th.
