Scientists have found what they believe is a new state of matter and the discovery was a result of studying, of all things, plain, everyday chickens.

The particle arrangement is called ‘disordered hyperuniformity’ and exhibits behaviors of both a liquid and a crystal.

The configuration has never before been seen in a biological system.

Researchers discovered it when taking a closer look at the seemingly random arrangement of light and color receptors, or cones, that exist in chicken eyes.

In most living things, they’re highly ordered and form distinct patterns.

That hadn’t previously appeared to be the case in chickens; however, closer examination showed that there are, in fact, aspects of uniformity.

The 5 types of cones form orderly arrangements within their respective color and light sensing groups. Those groups then layer on top of one another, but in a disorganized fashion.

Scientists believe the receptor particles operate in the way they do to allow for varying light levels to be sampled evenly.

The discovery could eventually aid technology in the arenas of optical circuitry and light detection.

Specifically, it could inform advancements in the making flexible, light-transmitting materials.
