A passenger terminal at PortMiami was temporarily shutdown because of an antique compass.
Abrupt, unexpected evacuations are nothing to take lightly. However once the cause of the evacuation is located and handled, the situation isn’t always serious.
That’s what happened after at least one passenger terminal at PortMiami was temporarily shutdown because of an antique compass. Travelers were immediately evacuated once it was discovered that a then unknown object in a passenger’s backpack was emitting radiation.
That person was detained to evaluate the radiation levels emitting from their bag and Customs and Border Protection agents soon learned the culprit was an old compass, and the evacuation was a false alarm.
However that didn’t mean the scene wasn’t tumultuous. The whole ordeal started at around 9 in the morning. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Hazmat team was called to PortMiami as a precaution.
Passengers onboard ships were forced to stay put, while those who had been rushed out of the terminal were left standing on shore to wait for further instruction
That went on for about two hours. By 11 o’clock an ‘all-clear’ was given, allowing everyone to get back to business.
