A group of unidentified armed men have taken control of the regional government offices and parliament building in Simferopol, in the Crimea region of Ukraine.

The site was the scene of Wednesday’s scuffles between Tatar groups and pro-Russian supporters.

Local Tatar leader, Refat Chubarov posted that the government buildings had been occupied by men in uniforms with no “recognisable insignia.”

Following the fall of President Viktor Yanukovych divisions within Ukraine have come to the fore.

Pro-Russian defence groups have set up road blocks and barricades to prevent pro-European protesters from travelling to the region from the capital Kyiv.

As tensions simmer Russia has placed troops on alert and implemented measures to increase security at Russia’s Black Sea Fleet based in the area.
