STORY: Latin pop sensation Shakira inaugurated the eighth school she has sponsored for needy children through her Barefoot Foundation on Monday (February 24). The school in Cartagena is expected to accommodate some 1,700 students. Shakira, who attended the opening ceremony with her son Milan, addressed the children who attended the event.

"I am very happy to see your little faces, students who will be studying at this school. I see that you are very excited and that gives me great joy to know that in this space you will have all the necessary tools to one day become good citizens, to grow up healthy, protected, away from violence, away from drugs and close to your ideals," she said.

The Grammy Award-winning star founded the Pies Descalzos (Barefoot) Foundation in 1997. In 2004, the organisation built its first school.
