Russian gay couple ties the knot in Argentina

While not being able to marry at home, this gay Russian couple took their love abroad and got hitched in Argentina.

They fled Russia, where they said they felt unsafe due to increased police repression.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN MARRIED IN ARGENTINA, ALEXANDER EREMEEV, SAYING:

"We are very happy to have been able to this after so many years. We have known each other for a long time. We've been wanting to do this. We also want to thank Argentina, this magnificent country which gave us the possibility to formalize our romantic relationship."

In July 2010, Argentina became the first Latin American country to approve same-sex marriage.

And, non-residents of Argentina can also get married in Buenos Aires if they present their passports and addresses of where they are staying.

This couple is originally from Sochi, which hosted the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

They plan to petition the Argentine government for refugee status with the intent of stayi
