Taiwanese schools make girls wear knee-high skirts in cold weather
  • 10 years ago
It's been relatively cold for long periods of time this winter in Taiwan, but it's been even colder for some Taiwanese school girls, because they have to wear knee-high skirts.

A student from Dao Jiang (稻江) Senior High School complained to the Apple Daily newspaper about the school's uniform policy. Female students there are not allowed to wear long pants, but only skirts in the winter.

Most public high schools in Taiwan provide students with winter attire that includes pants for female students. But some private schools only allow girls to wear skirts.

Last month Taiwan's Ministry of Education (MOE) issued a communique to all high schools addressing the issue. According to the official document, not giving female students the option of wearing pants violates the gender equality law. Some schools, however, defend their policy on the grounds of preserving school traditions and will not make any changes to their uniforms.
