China's top observatory has raised the smog alert from yellow to orange, the second-highest level in severity, with heavy smog expected to continue to shroud northern and central China for another two days.
Meanwhile, China is taking measures to control air pollution, including limiting vehicles on the road and suspending factory production.
Inspection teams have been dispatched to Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and their surrounding areas to check the response to the pollution.
