Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Francois Hollande have voiced concern over the political crisis in Ukraine.
Hollande called Putin on the telephone to try to persuade him to support a peaceful transfer of power in Ukraine. Earlier, US President Barack Obama also made a phone call to Putin to urge him to accept the transition. Meanwhile, in Ukraine, the people are still deeply divided over relations with Russia. One poll by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology found that 39 percent of Ukrainians wanted to join the EU, while almost the same number preferred closer ties with Russia. Pro-EU sentiment prevails in Kiev and western Ukraine, while the south and east, which have a large number of ethnic Russians, are pro-Russia.
