German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin have talked on the phone in a call initiated by Angela Merkel.

It’s reported the chancellor’s office said both agreed Ukraine’s ‘territorial integrity” must be upheld. Other reaction from Moscow included an appeal by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church – “Brother and sisters in Ukraine I call for unity,” he told his church congregation.

One of the men who helped broker the initial agreement signed between the ousted President Viktor Yanukovych and the opposition also spoke of unity.

“How should Europe and France behave towards Ukraine now? Accompany the transition to democracy and hope it will be peaceful and that the integrity of the unity of Ukraine will be respected,” said Laurent Fabius, French Foreign Minister

Angela Merkel also called Yulia Tymoshenko to congratulate her on being released while British Foreign Secretary William Hague warned Russia not to undermine Ukraine’s economic relations with the rest of the world.
