Lviv residents in Western Ukraine came to the city's cathedral on Saturday (February 22) to pay last respects to a local who was killed during violent Kiev clashes earlier this week.

Bohdan Solchanik, 28, was killed by sniper fire on Independence Square in Kiev on Thursday (February 20).

He was a history teacher at the Ukrainian Catholic University.

More than a thousand people came to the memorial mass, including the city's authorities and those who never met Solchanik.

The farewell ceremony was held as Ukraine's parliament voted on Saturday to remove President Viktor Yanukovich, who abandoned his Kiev office to protesters and denounced what he described as a coup after a week of fighting in the streets of the capital that left 82 people killed.
