Ukraine: new parliamentary speaker elected
  • 10 years ago
The speaker of parliament, a Viktor Yanukovych loyalist, resigned on Saturday.

Ukrainian MPs elected a close ally of jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko to the
powerful post.

Oleksander Turchynov is a senior member of Tymoshenko’s Fatherland party.

“Legitimate power in Ukraine is the Ukrainian parliament. It’s very important that the Ukrainian parliament resumes it’s normal work. The main goal of the parliament is to restart the normal functioning of all the political institutions.”
