Eye of the Hurricane

This video is a tribute to the beautiful hamlet of Bardou in Southern France. In the late 1960's, German traveler Klaus Erhart and his American wife Jean, stumbled upon a ruined and abandoned village in the mountains. They set out to purchase it, and embarked on a lifetime project of restoring the houses, and making it a retreat for artists, wanderers, and lost souls. I was fortunate enough to find it back in 1970, when I was hitchhiking though Europe. I ended up staying there for 9 months, through a winter when there were only 5 people in the village. There was no electricity or running water, so for a kid from L.A., it was quite an education.
A few years later, back in the U.S., I wrote a song to try and encapsulate my feelings about that very emotional experience. The song was recorded with my group Lip Service in Seattle Washington in 1992, and can be downloaded free along with other Lip Service recordings at:

For the video I used the few old photos of Bardou I had, but I also used whatever I could find on the web, so thanks and apologies to the photographers whose work I appropriated.
