An explosion in the southern suburbs of Beirut on Wednesday (February 19) appeared to be caused by a twin bomb attack using a car and a motorcycle, security sources said.

The blast occurred near Iran's cultural centre in an area supportive of Shi'ite political and militant movement Hezbollah. Iran's embassy in the same area was targeted by a bomb attack in November, one a series of car bombs in southern Beirut since July.

The Kuwaiti embassy is also located in the same area.

Several burnt out vehicles and debris littered the scene, with the windows of near-by buildings blown out.

Lebanese television showed the flaming wreckage of several cars and Lebanese soldiers standing in the streets. A wounded man was carried away on a stretcher. Glass covered the road and nearby buildings were damaged.

Radical Sunni Islamists have pledged to attack Hezbollah on Lebanese soil for its intervention in Syria to help Syrian President
