A Democrat in the White House has been linked to lower infant mortality rates, say the authors of a controversial new study.

The researchers, who hail from the University of Michigan, examined a period of almost 50 years, during which time there were 4 Democratic presidents and 5 Republican ones.

Overall, they confirmed that infant mortality rates fell over 75 percent, but said there were notable variations in the rate of decline over the years.

When a Democrat held the high office there were 3 percent fewer infant deaths than when the country was led by a Republican.

Since the study results were published, many have come forward to criticize the researchers’ methodology, but the team’s leader is resolute in the findings’ veracity.

In the wake of the accusations of faulty practices, he announced that he and his colleagues approached the data in several ways and came up with similar results each time.

As a possible explanation for the changes in numbers, the authors posit, “…whether a government advocates austerity measures or increasing social welfare protections as the response to economic crisis may reflect such ideological differences and influence mortality rates.”
