Describing the Lok Sabha's passage of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill as unconstitutional, senior Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Sitaram Yechury alleged Tuesday that there was match fixing between the government and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Ukraine's festering political crisis took a deadly turn Tuesday, as thousands of anti-government protesters clashed with police outside Ukraine's parliament. Three protesters were killed in the melee, the opposition reported, and emergency workers found another person dead after a fire at the ruling party's office in Kiev. Law enforcement agencies gave the demonstrators a deadline of 6 p.m. local time to stop the confrontations and vowed to restore order. Dozens of protesters and police were injured in the clashes Tuesday, which broke out after opposition leaders accused pro-government factions in parliament of dragging their feet on a constitutional reform that would limit presidential powers — a key opposition demand.
The streets of Venezula's capital Caracas were filled with security forces armed with riot gear and water cannon Tuesday morning ahead of planned marches by supporters and opponents of President Nicolas Maduro. The protests were scheduled less than 24 hours after a 17-year-old student protester became the fourth person killed from political unrest during the past week, opposition activists said. The protests have gained momentum among the student population since the start of February and represent the biggest challenge to Maduro who was elected following the death of his mentor, the socialist icon Hugo Chavez.
