Ukraine: Nine people die in Kyiv clashes

Nine people have died during the latest clashes in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv: seven civilians and two police officers, according to a police spokeswoman. One of those police officers was shot in the neck.

Ukrainian protesters hurled petrol bombs, fireworks and stones at riot police on Tuesday in the worst day of violence since demonstrations erupted against President Viktor Yanukovych 12 weeks ago.

Western powers warned Yanukovych against trying to smash the anti-government demonstrations and opposition leader Vitaly Klitschko, fearing an assault, urged women and children to leave Kyiv’s central Independence Square “to avoid further victims”.

Ukraine will restrict incoming traffic to Kyvv from midnight on Tuesday to prevent the escalation of clashes of anti-government protesters with police.
