Anti-government protesters have clashed with riot police in Kyiv as demonstrators march on Ukraine’s parliament ahead of a key vote on constitutional change.
After being blocked by a line of trucks about 100 metres
short of the building, protesters reportedly hurled stones at police who replied with stun and smoke grenades.
The opposition wants to curtail powers accumulated by President Viktor Yanukovych such as appointing the prime minister and government as well as regional governors.
Yanukovych could name his next prime minister on Tuesday to replace Russian-born Mykola Azarov, whom he sacked last month. The opposition is hoping for a moderate as a sign that Yanukovych is open to change.
Moscow meanwhile has pledged fresh cash for Ukraine after the opposition asked for EU aid in a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday.
