A Border Control employee and new mother was fired from her job for failing to take a firearms test. She believes its really because she refused to choose between her career and breastfeeding her child.
Sophia Cruz, who worked at the Lordsburg, New Mexico post, was given a letter not long ago that made it clear it would be one or the other. In it was an ultimatum – return to full duty or quit.
Rather, Cruz chose to follow her doctor’s advice and the agency’s official guidelines on the matter.
Her physician specified to her superiors that she was to work light duty in an environment free of altercations. Night shifts were also to be avoided.
When it came to pumping breast milk, she asserts she was following company policy – it’s the Border Patrol that was in violation of its own rules.
According to its Lactation Support Program, breast-feeding mothers are to be given reasonable break time and access to a sanitized lactation room in which they can pump milk.
As the agency failed to be in full compliance on both counts and she disagrees with the circumstances surrounding her firing, she is taking action to be reinstated.
