Castaway from El Salvador prepares for hospital release

His hair cut, and clean shaven, the castaway from El Salvador who washed ashore on the Marshall Islands looks like a new man.

The treacherous story Jose Salvador Alvarenga tells, of having spent more than a year adrift at sea and surviving off turtle blood and fish he caught with bare hands, was quick to capture international headlines.

Medics at a San Salvador hospital say he's preparing to return home.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) SAN RAFAEL HOSPITAL DIRECTOR, YEDER RAMIREZ, SAYING:

"His mental health is gradually improving. Today the multidisciplinary team to accompany him back home was announced. The team includes two psychiatrist medics and one psychologist who will follow his treatment. At the moment they are in the hospital talking to him so he can explain all the problems that have concerned him all this time."

Though the exact dates of his departure remains a mystery, it is believed he set sail on a fishing boat from Mexico in late December 2012.
