Arkansas State football player dies protecting his parents

Arkansas State football player Markel Owens was killed Thursday in Jackson, Tennessee, as he was trying to protect his parents during a home invasion.
Markel Owens and his mother were at home Thursday (January 16) night. As Owens' stepfather Johnny Shivers arrived home at their duplex, he was rushed by two masked men. The intruders then forced themselves into the home and then demanded cash from the occupants before a struggle broke out.
In the course of that struggle, the intruders shot Owens and Shivers. Police say Owens died while trying to protect his mother. Both Owens and Shivers died at the scene. Owen's mom was also shot but survived and has since been released from hospital.
Police say they believe Shivers was specifically targeted and authorities found a large amount of marijuana at the home. The thieves reportedly escaped with a large amount of cash. It's unknown why the robbers left the marijuana at the scene.
Owens was a 21-year-old junior defensive lineman with the Arkansas State Red Wolves, who was credited with helping his team win their third consecutive Sun Belt Conference title last year.
Arkansas State athletic director Terry Mohajir and the school's information director Jerry Scott told reporters that the loss of Owens was a "sad day" for the school and issued a statement offering their deep condolences to the Owens' family.
Owens, originally from Jackson, Tennessee, was a formidable player. At 6-foot-2 and over 300 pounds he excelled as a defensive lineman and seemed poised for a long career in football.
