Deadly snow and ice storms hits US

At least 13 people have been killed in a snow and ice storm that has gripped the southeastern United States.
The severe weather snap has caused chaos to road, rail and air travel and power has been cut off to more than 300,000 homes.
The weather was blamed for at least 10 deaths, including three who were killed when an ambulance transporting a patient skidded off an icy road.
It happened in Carlsbad, Texas – about 400 km southwest of Dallas, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.
Authorities have issued warnings and advisories to people living in an area from the state of Arkansas right across to the Atlantic coast. Up to 38 cm of snow is expected in the coming days.
State of emergencies have been declared too from Louisiana to New Jersey.
The worsening storm stretched from eastern Texas to the Carolinas, and was likely to reach the Middle Atlantic states by late Wednesday, National Weather Service meteorologist Roger Edwards said.
