Prince Harry was targeted by a Belfast man who is now sentenced to 3 years in jail after voluntarily turning himself in one day before carrying out murder plans.
Prince Harry served two tours in Afghanistan. For this reason, the Prince was targeted by a Belfast man who is now sentenced to 3 years in jail after voluntarily turning himself in one day before carrying out murder plans.
A British citizen, 31-year-old Mark Townley converted to Islam and changed his name to Ashraf Islam. He believed he had “a moral right to judge” the Prince.
The judge said Islam’s premeditated actions prove him a public threat, but more than 3 years would be excessive. He described Islam’s plans as “vague and unlikely to succeed.”
After researching the Prince while in Thailand, Islam arrived in London intending to disarm an officer and use that gun at close range.
Instead, Islam anxiously walked into a police station to confess his plot – shortly after Soldier Lee Rigby was viciously murdered by Muslims in Woolwich.
Islam’s legal defense was personality disorder.
According to Irish public broadcaster Philip Boucher-Hayes, Islam probably turned himself in for protection from shady creditors or free housing and meals. He added, “Linking himself indirectly to the Woolwich attack would simply appeal to Mark’s twisted sense of the theatric.”
