Beatlemania returned to the Washington Coliseum exactly 50 years to the day after the Fab Four played their first US concert at the same venue.
Beatlemania being the name of the tribute band. The 2014 audience could not quite recreate the teenage screaming that drowned out the original act for many present, but they loved it nonetheless.
Carole McCracken was there in February 1964, and returned for a trip down memory lane.
“The stage was a boxing ring in the middle of the arena and I was in the fifth row. It was fantastic. It was so exciting,” she remembered. “It was unbelievable that they were right smack in front of me singing and I could hear everything. It was so exciting!”
An exhibition of photos from the 1964 Beatles press conference gave added spice to the event – and to the venue, now usually a car park.
Meanwhile the band played on – the same setlist as once echoed round the arena half a century before.
A few days earlier, the Arctic Monkeys added their own Beatles tribute in the US – performing “All My Loving” as the British band celebrated their recent American chart-topping success with a sell-out appearance at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-beatles/1964/washington-coliseum-washington-dc-53d20701.htmlhttp://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/feb/11/arctic-monkeys-america-finally-victory
